Best Irish Joke in 2009

This was a great joke. It was voted the best Irish joke in 2009.

Let's have some fun during the Chinese New Year then.

So here goes.........

"John O’Reilly hoisted his beer and said, ‘Here’s to spending the rest of me
life, between the legs of me wife!’

That won him the top prize at the pub for the best toast of the night!

He went home and told his wife, Mary, ‘I won the prize for the Best toast of the night.’

She said, ‘Aye, did ye now. And what was your toast?’

John said, ‘Here’s to spending the rest of me life, sitting in church beside me wife.’

‘Oh, that is very nice indeed, John!’ Mary said.

The next day, Mary ran into one of John’s drinking buddies on the street corner.

The man chuckled leeringly and said, ‘John won the prize the other night at
the pub with a toast about you, Mary.’

She said, ‘Aye, he told me, and I was a bit surprised myself. You know, he’s only been there twice in the last four years. Once he fell asleep, and the other time I had to pull him by the ears to make him come.’ "

The Traditional Chinese New Year Goodies

Well, it is the eve of the new year again. One year older but are we any wiser?

Whatever it is, let us have a a cognac, whisky or beer to ring in the new year.

These are some of the traditional Chinese dishes associated with the new years' eve family gathering . Can you identify them? The first one is the famed ' Eight Treasures' comprising vegetables of eight colours'.The next dish is abalone mushroom- to bring flavour into your life. Then there is the harlok-to bring laughter into your lives. The next one is the Chinese leek dish. The Chinese call it 'suana'. Eating this dish will ensure your life is ever orderly in the new year. Look at the seventh dish. It is hoi si fatt choy. Eat it and you will prosper! Look out for the promfret . It signifies you will have food all year round. And what about the other dish-the pig stomach and gingko soup? What does it portends? Find that out for me.

We are having some of these dishes today for lunch. We are having curry chicken, pork lobak, pig stomach gingko pepper soup and ju hu char.

Tonight the family will be having steamboat.

The Many Colours of A Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner

This is a neat article written by Tay Tian Yan in mysinchew.com today.

I think most of us can reflect  through some of these stages of  the celebration of the reunion dinner. No doubt these days you can book a table for a reunion dinner in one of those posh restaurants in town and still in a way appreciate the cultural values amidst the commercialization of the affair.

Let us read the aithor's article and appreciate what it is worth.

"FEB 12 — We have different expectations for Chinese New Year in different stages of life.

During childhood, it is a kind excitement: playing firecrackers and games without any intervention.

It is like a pent-up child who has found a way to give off his chest. It is only a game.

During early youth, it is something new and exciting: dating, drinking and gambling. It is a short-term debauch.

It is like trying to step into the adult world while challenging taboos and guilt.

During youth, it is a kind of responsibility: busy running about, sending gifts to tighten relationships.

Based on Chinese New Year customs, we allow ourselves to be fully socialised and accept traditional requirements. However, it makes us feel tired and helpless.

During middle-age, it is a frame of mind: it all depends on our own feelings to choose the way we want to celebrate it.

We have no earnest expectation and it does not require any special arrangements. All we have to do is to feel the seasonal change, as well as the growth ring of life with our hearts.

Therefore, my Chinese New Year celebration seems very simple this year.

Without a north-south journey, shopping that always seems to have missed something, gift-giving, endless dinners and gatherings, as well as New Year escape trip, I just wish to sit down quietly and enjoy the reunion dinner.

Together, we enjoy the dinner and enter a brand new year.

Previously, I though that reunion dinners are only meant to reunion in which everyone sits around a table to tighten relationships.

But I realised later that the dinner is also meant to forgive and forget. The gap, dissatisfaction, complaints, ...should all be decomposed and digested through oral movements.

With the help of sweet wine and great dishes, affections are sublimated and connections are re-established.

Through the reunion atmosphere, we can find a mutual dependent relationship.

In fact, many customs contain far-reaching moral values.

We are required to salute the elders and worship when we were young. But we did not fully understand and recognise the customs.

Today, when we have lost the opportunity to do it again, we realised that it is a way to internalised the spirit and traditions.

The spiritual world of Chinese includes heaven, earth and humans. Humans are in the middle with heaven on top and earth beneath. The Chinese worship heaven first, followed by earth and ancestors.

Worshiping our ancestors is actually paying respect to our blood and the origin of our lives. It is a feeling of thanksgiving.

Paying door-to-door visits is actually expanding our relationships and affections.

Chinese New Year is a kind of normal human relationship, extending from families to the society and the world. It is to arrange the order of our "love" and by following the "love order", we make ourselves, families and the society live in harmony.

Feel the changes over the past year and have a taste of the throb of life.

No matter how you are going to celebrate it, I would like to wish you and your family a peaceful and blessed new year. Live a rainbow life in the brand new year!"

Happy Chinese New Year, everyone!

The Tim-sum Party

We had this gathering last year (2009), I think at I-Dragon Restaurant at Cititel in Mid-valley Mall.

As you can see everyone is happy when they have a full stomach of goodies tucked away.

Dining at the i-Dragon

Do you think the smiles are a bit of a put-on?

Labour of Love

I think this is a great picture to epitomise Valentine's Day's  spirit of romantic love. What say you?

Valentine's Day: Extra Special for Lovers?

So, how many of you are still in the romantic love phase? Do you still feel that sense of anticipation and bewilderment when you see your loved one? If you are then either you are one humongous liar or an absolutely incurable romantic.

Most of us, I believe are in the matured love phase. The love here is a sustaining love that both partners must endeavour  to keep their marriage alive. It does not mean that there will not be 'ups and downs' in matured love but in the end, love must endure and triumph!

So what have you heard about Valentine's Day lately?

It was in the papers the other day that there are college students in Malaysia, who go panty-less on Valentine's Day dine-outs who subsequently go to cheap hotels to have sex. As such, the local Muslim cleric watchdog authorities will be on the look-out this year for such misdemeanors!

Anyway, love should never end once kindled. In fact, every day should be Valentine Days for lovers in love!

Are you one of them?

WELL DONE HENG!

Well done Heng to get us started. Will keep u posted.
Here's wishing u all a very Hppy, Healthy & Prosperous CNY.

Global Marketplace

Well, since there are many of us who are scattered all over the four corners of the globe,Helen suggested that a blog be created just for us to up-date one another on the goings-on among friends.

As the blog administrator, I will be allowing posts to be made by all our friends. Do feel free to post photographs and sundry items that you think will interest the group.

I will be sending the name of the blog to those on my email list and by extension,I do hope they will in turn forward it to their networks.

Here are some photos of a gathering in Perth in early January 2010. you can see Esther,Man Lin, Swee Pin and Helen in the photos. According to Helen and Man Lin, it was a swell gathering.

From Esther's viewpoint, it helps in her grieving process.

Happy posting.
