The Traditional Chinese New Year Goodies

Well, it is the eve of the new year again. One year older but are we any wiser?

Whatever it is, let us have a a cognac, whisky or beer to ring in the new year.

These are some of the traditional Chinese dishes associated with the new years' eve family gathering . Can you identify them? The first one is the famed ' Eight Treasures' comprising vegetables of eight colours'.The next dish is abalone mushroom- to bring flavour into your life. Then there is the harlok-to bring laughter into your lives. The next one is the Chinese leek dish. The Chinese call it 'suana'. Eating this dish will ensure your life is ever orderly in the new year. Look at the seventh dish. It is hoi si fatt choy. Eat it and you will prosper! Look out for the promfret . It signifies you will have food all year round. And what about the other dish-the pig stomach and gingko soup? What does it portends? Find that out for me.

We are having some of these dishes today for lunch. We are having curry chicken, pork lobak, pig stomach gingko pepper soup and ju hu char.

Tonight the family will be having steamboat.

Kong Hei Fatt Choy!
